Parliament was finally dissolved later that month. For a time all was quiet. The Lords Appellant did not make a much better job of subduing France than the previous administration. Power began to slip from their hands, reaching a crises point when the Commons lost faith in them and withdrew their support later that autumn. It seemed to matter little to those lords at the forefront of the affair. Perhaps, as many believed, they cared more for removing the king’s inner circle than they did for governing England.

Over the intervening months, Gregory kept to his own lands and did not do anything to draw further attention to himself. Occasional letters came from Chaucer, keeping him appraised of matter at court and developments in France. It seemed that life was set to return quietly to a more even course, and Gregory welcomed it. His lands prospered, despite the war with France setting the price of wool at an all time low. His children grew and overcame their shyness of the man they had not seen for the best part of the year. And Alienor, having delivered a scathing tirade when they journeyed home – which Gregory privately relished – was happy to go back to needling him on an occasional basis now he was confined to his own barony. After the venomous intrigue and cruelty of court, Gregory found all these things far sweeter than before.

But he wondered how the king fared. Richard was almost twenty-one. There was no excuse for the lords to attempt to retain power once he reached his majority, though they were none of them, the king included, men who would willingly share power. Time would tell. Perhaps this terrible year had been a learning experience for Richard. It was tempting to hope that something good might come of it. Gregory watched his daughter and two small sons playing in the orchard at Maudesley Castle and hoped the worst was behind him.
